Conservative Management of TMD and Orofacial Pain

From Pain Neurophysiology to Structured Self-Care

August 24 @ 5:30 pm 7:00 pm IST

360 Anniversary Lecture 2

Most temporomandibular disorders are muscular, and many respond well to conservative, patient-centred care before a device or medication is considered. This session connects the neurophysiology of masticatory muscle pain with a structured, practical self-care programme that clinicians can introduce from the very first appointment.

About this event

Temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain are often multifactorial, and the site where pain is felt may not always be its true source.
This lecture connects the neurophysiology of muscular TMD with practical conservative management. Dr. Leonardo Brigido Metello Neves will explain acute and chronic pain, referred pain, trigeminal convergence, diagnostic anaesthesia, and the influence of stress and muscle activity on symptoms.
The session will then introduce a structured, evidence-based self-care programme covering load reduction, resting jaw posture, parafunctional habits, thermotherapy, self-massage, stretching, sleep, physical activity, nutrition, and mind–body strategies.
Participants will leave with a clearer rationale for conservative care and a practical protocol they can use with patients from the first appointment.

Why attend?

  • Understand the mechanisms underlying muscular TMD
Distinguish acute from chronic pain and examine how muscular, neurological, and emotional factors can contribute to the development and persistence of symptoms.
  • Identify the true source of orofacial pain
Understand trigeminal convergence and referred pain, and learn how diagnostic anaesthesia can help differentiate the site where pain is felt from its actual source.
  • Approach TMD as a multifactorial condition
Explore the concept of the individual symptom threshold and how reducing multiple contributing factors can support meaningful clinical improvement.
  • Provide patients with structured first-line care
Gain a ready-to-use, evidence-based self-management programme that can be introduced during the first clinical appointment.

Who should attend?

This session will be valuable for dentists, oral medicine specialists, oral and maxillofacial diagnosticians, prosthodontists, orthodontists, oral surgeons, physiotherapists working with orofacial pain, postgraduate students, dental educators, and clinicians involved in the assessment or management of temporomandibular disorders and chronic facial pain.

His research focuses on conservative and minimally invasive approaches to TMD and orofacial pain, pain phenotyping, systemic comorbidities, and regenerative therapies.
